All I want for Christmas is my S4 back, my S4 back...

No news on the completed repair yet of the car, if I am lucky I will get it back for Christmas. I will try to get a print-out of the updated service records, I am not sure this blog is big enough! The longer I drive this 2009 A4 I realize that Audi has cut corners over the previous models, as discussed in previous blogs, the electronics are very unpredictable and work intermittently, but there is more. I noticed all the old 2.0, or 1.8 Turbos have dual exhaust, this car has a single exhaust with 2 tips, also the new S4 the engine actually costs $7000 less than my 4.2. The trunk hinge in the new 2009+ A/S4 is also very cheap, flimsy, and tends to break as seen here: http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2749627, I am sure Audi has never heard of this problem though and it is (as usual) the customers fault. The one good thing about this car is it does have room for passengers with legs in the backseat, versus the previous amputee models.

Hmmm. OK.

I already have a major issue with the Audi! There was crazy amounts of oil
under the car the other day.

Took it in... they are not accepting responsibility that it is related the
to $6400 service the previous owner did November 11th even though it is
coming from essentially the same area of the engine. I have also noticed
that the rear air suspension has a air leak... yikes!!

I already spoke to the old owner about buying it back...

What type of service cost over $6000? Sounds like the car had a major problem.

Subject: Re: AllRoad

$6000 was for new timing belt, cam adjuster seals, valve cover seals, water pump, front air suspension, abs circuit, oil change.

Currently they are claiming the cam seal has let go due to the cold and not related to the previous worked.

That's a great design then, I guess Germany is a tropical country and it is really unusual for the cars to experience cold. This is the typical response you get from Audi, it is not the dealer, but Audi that tells them this.

The car will not warm up again, and after closer inspection the actuator is stuck in the “open” position, we are waiting for the part to come in from Vancouver. The car also will not start when it is cold, but this seems to be a common issue with this car that (of course) Audi has never heard of: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324197. They have replaced the clutch switch, but are now off to replacing my starter for an additional $900 labour and parts. I may have to get a third job just to support driving this car.

The one positive note is they are confident the Check Engine Light issues have finally been resolved, one down, how many more to go?

Dealer called to say they are testing car now to make sure it is fully functional, I had hoped to have it back on Friday, but we had a giant snow storm and that probably delayed getting the car back. Probably is for the best since I probably would have torn off the sound pan under the car again in the deep snow. A couple positive things about the B8 A4, is the ability to turn off traction control (ASR) and Stability protection (ESP) separately, it gives you the ability to get moving with wheel spin in the deep snow, but doesn’t let the car spin-out. I noticed the ESP on this car lets it get a little more sideways than my car before cutting in to straighten the vehicle. One bad thing however is in extreme cold the centre display between the gauges freezes up and is very slow to respond.

So it is official now, I missed the entire summer with my car, and am getting back with winter wheels, hopefully next year is more positive.

NEW UPDATE! Dealer has found cause of check engine light; I have been told the connectors are reversed on the post catalytic converter sensors “right connectors, wrong bank”. Now the car is throwing another code and requires another sensor that has to be ordered. I estimate the car should be done and tested in 2 more weeks. It Is positive that they are finding problems, and working through them, this is better than the previous mechanic that just said everything was fine.

When I talk to other Audi owners on the forums, some take exception to my negative experiences and comments about Audi. These are the same people that complain about the car not starting, headlight condensation, oil consumption, and failed air conditioning units. I am frequently greeted with “my car doesn’t do that”, so I guess it is not a real problem, recently on a thread about failed starters, one guy commented on how Audi was awesome to deal with and credited him 50% for his bad starter. This is amazing to me since so many of these cars have bad starters, it is a factory defect, and people are thankful they only had to pay half! Audi should fix these problems, but more often than not all you get is “we are not aware of that problem”. Anyways it seems Audi can do no wrong even if they make a car that has a high failure rate, people seem to be happy to pay extra for the German experience and poor service, reminds me of the Seinfeld Episode with the “soup nazi”, except in this case it’s “no warranty for you!”

Last update I received from dealer was they replaced the thermostat but now the car is showing an error code originating before the catalytic converter (Pre Cat), it had only thrown error codes after the converter before (Post Cat). Mechanic was going to change oxygen sensor again, and see, he had been driving car and monitoring with scanalizer and said it was all within spec and suddenly the Check Engine Light (CEL) came on.

This is a areal long term test of this 2009 Audi 2.0 B8 A4 - At work one of our vendors asked if I would recommend an A3 or A4 for his wife the other day, here is what I said: Audi is a real driver’s car, it is fun to drive, and you can really feel the road and what the car is doing. The ergonomics of the car is very good compared to say a new Malibu (steering wheel too big). If you graded the car only on driving experience the Audi would pass with flying colours; however there are a few other categories. Technology – great ideas and tech, however highly unreliable, of all the B8’s I have had all have had some form of electronic gremlin or features not working. Build quality – great build quality for a Dodge, but not what is expected from a German luxury car, of the 5 loaners all have varied dramatically; bad A/C in one, bad transmission in another, and varied engine response in others. Audi Support – This site speaks to that, and search the forums. Audi corporate treats customers poorly, and are too arrogant to realize, sadly this is from the company that brought us the flaming non-braking gem of a car - the Audi 5000.

Hope to have my S4 back soon, in working condition.

Oil Consumption Issues.

I received my oil consumption test results. I drove for about 400 miles and it drank 1.3qts of oil. No engine issues, no oil leaking, no blue smoke, plugs all look fine, and car doesn't seem to be down on power. They suggested a PCV valve replacement and then another oil test and I thought that was BS so I asked them to use a boroscope to check the cylinder walls. They called me back and the techs now all agree the motor needs to come out. They want to tear the motor down to find the issue. The car is under an extended warranty which requires the dealer to find the issue before they pay for it. I'm on the hook for $4k worth of engine work if they don't find anything. I talked to the Tech and he said with that amount of oil consumption he is going to find an issue so I shouldn't worry. I'm still very worried though. Crossing my fingers for now and hoping I get a new shortblock!

It’s almost like I own this 2010 2.0 B8 A4, too bad I don’t like it and want my car back. Have not heard back from dealer and will have to follow up with them later this week. Been trolling the forums and see a few more issues with this 4.2 engine and oil consumption. Another complaint I have about this B8 A4, is the delay in response when you get on the gas. It seems like forever before the car does anything, it improves if you push the “sport” button but otherwise, man is it slow to go. Nothing like trying to clear an intersection and waiting for the car to decide to go, as vehicles approach you. I have attached a nice picture of the car, just a little dark, but wheels look good, *sigh*.

Spoke to dealer today, they said my thermostat has failed so they are going to replace that and hope it fixes the problem, I think that’s a reeeeeally long shot but we’ll see. Amazing all the stuff wrong with this car, I bought a broken stripper (see another post for explanation of stripper comment).

Has pretty good power from the Turbo, but seems to run out of power before redline. The car handles fairly well and if I had one I would probably stop braking for all corners and just stay on the gas, it’s a really nimble little car. Doesn’t have the solid feeling of the Mercedes, Audi or Cadillac and this is apparent the first time you close the doors. It has nice pedals stock and a shorter throw shifter. I had the car going pretty good through some corners and put the ABS and stability control to task, it was fun but seems to lack a bit of brake bite when you need to stop in a hurry. I am going to get some good outside pictures and post on my flickr site. Hopefully my friend still talks to me and lets me drive it again!

I'm going to pass along your letter to the Audi folks I know. No promises, but maybe it will help get you a little better attention. Here's wishing you better motoring...

Sounds like the guys are all eager to fix the problem now. They told me my car seems slow compared to others they have driven, that’s good news cause maybe it will make it easier to find the fault. A mechanic is taking the car home tonight and leaving the scanner connected to see if they find any “values” out of range. The car was first brought in for the engine replacement in April, it’s almost November and the problem is still ongoing, I wish it was over...

Bloomberg Article

B8 A4
Originally uploaded by homeychan
I came across the following article on Bloomberg written by Jason Harper: ”http://wealth.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601093&sid=aRwLOQhGcb3s” reviewing the Audi S4 and R8, journalists get to review “test” cars in ideal settings and rarely get the long term experience with the vehicle. It prompted me to write the following email to the writer:
You did a great job writing that article but you neglected the fact the new Audi A series are built cheaper, the new S4 motor is $7000 less than the old 4.2. While the electronics are nicer they are inconsistent, based on the 5 loaner B8 A4's I have had in the last 8 months. You are correct and the cars are wonderful to drive with a nice personality and have and almost cult like following, but they are unreliable and the arrogance of Audi when it comes to customer service and response is pathetic. The service from Audi has been so terrible it prompted me to start a blog in hopes they would actually honour the warranty on my S4 http://audiwarranty.blogspot.com.

Journalists always get to test all the new cars but nobody ever writes a follow-up on the horrors of dealing with the company on warranty or build quality issues. It seems that most newspapers are afraid to criticize the manufacturers in fear of losing advertising revenue. These are expensive cars and my expectation was superior customer service over a domestic, so far I have been wrong.

I bought my S4 because it blew me away when I drove it, however after the way Audi corporate has treated me right to the CEO level, I would never buy another one until Audi actually took responsibility and repaired my vehicle. You should try reporting a problem to Audi corporate; you get wonderful people in call centres that have no ability to help you. You are completely disconnected from anybody inside the company that can help instead deal with these people that relay your information back and forth, it is a nightmare.

One more point for my review of the B8, why does the phone integration not work properly all the time. It always links up, but only sometimes does it connect to the address book or call logs. This has been the same with all the B8's and is unpredicatable.

2010 Mercedes C300

Originally uploaded by homeychan
This is a very nice car, it has a lot more electronics than the Audi and I like the interior better. I took the car for a drive and while it is missing the kick of the 2.0 it sure does everything else great. It has power telescopic steering, power headrests and a cool trunk escape system. The gauge panel offers a neat display of car information; this car even has a full touchpad so you can dial numbers on your cell through Bluetooth. The only thing I didn’t like as much about this car was the steering; it felt very “vague” as it did not have a “tight” feel to it. While looking through the trunks of the cars I noticed the Audi still has the best grocery store hooks that fold up, the Merc has hooks on the sides but not nearly as effective as the Audi’s. I also noticed that Audi took out the left side storage panel with a door in the trunk and now it just contains electronics. The Mercedes is a better car overall than the 2.0 and has way more cool stuff, I just wouldn’t want to repair it or have to pay the repair bills if it fails.
Few points:
Mercedes missing ambient lighting in back seat
Mercedes has very nice centre panel and cluster
Headlight on Mercedes are very cool and fog lights come on and off based on direction turned.
Mercedes headlights turn off after car has been running in park for an extended period of time
Mercedes has amazing brakes
Mercedes Displays Owners name on console
Mercedes has a warranty against windshield chips

Some more 2009/10 B8 A4 Review

Now you may ask why would you want to turn any of this stuff off? For anybody that has driven in snow and ice, when you try to get across an intersection, the ASR won’t allow any wheel spin and the car essentially moves really slow, but with it disabled you can get some spin and the car actually moves. It sucks to pull out into an intersection then the car won’t go, so I usually disable it for that then turn it back on after. I’m sure all the other B8’s I have been able to turn off one or the other or both. Well disabling the ESP is just fun when the ground is all icy and you want to do some doughnuts/brodies or get all sideways.

Why won’t the mirror tilt down like on previous models when parking so I can see the curb, it just turns in so I can see the side of the car!

Side Assist has gone crazy again and just randomly flashes with nothing beside the car – Whiskey Tango Foxtrott.

Here are a couple positives – Mirrors are bigger on the B8, oh yeah I like pushing the door handle square to lock the doors instead of reaching for the remote in my pocket. Car also beeps everytime you lock it from the remote now, even if it was already locked!

I also have got the issues concerning excessive oil consumption which led to the replacement of the engine (I'm at the third engine now....). Today, I noticed there was again blue smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes, which means the problem has come back. That's why I began searching the internet for other owners who encountered the same situation.
Is it possible to give me more information about your case (especially since you had to get a lawyer to deal with Audi)? Could your lawyer do something for you? I ask the question because I'm seriously thinking about getting one for my case.
I thank you in advance!

Here’s another review of the new A4:
Positives
+Nice cup holders
+Nice electronics
+Side Assist feature
+More Headroom

-Cheaper interior
-Electronics have high failure rate
-Transmission clunky
-inconsistent build quality
-Doors no longer have detents or require single finger to close

-Mirrors do not fold in anymore
-Can’t figure out how to tilt mirrors down when parking, only tilt inwards
-Overall car seems to be built cheaper, does not have the same solid feel of previous model

I attached a video to this post, I was at race City last week for a Legend car race school and at the end they let us do a couple laps in our cars on the oval. I did 2 laps behind that Cadillac SRX, the car sounds amazing. I wish I did more so I could post the full recording. That SRX was hauling, I don’t think I have ever seen an SUV go that fast until the power steering pump blew up! All the videos and pics are on my flickr site (http://www.flickr.com/homeychan ).

Sway me please

Service
Originally uploaded by homeychan
Well I have done a lot of research on my check engine light and this would be the first Audi or even car on the planet to have this problem because of a Cat back exhaust. So the explanation from the mechanic does not seem plausible, eitherway car goes back in next Tuesday for service.

*Update* 1 problem resolved, the clunk from the front of the car was the sway bar, the bolt had been sheared off, interesting because I haven’t driven the car hard or had the sway bar off, however the shop has had the car apart many times.

Here is one of the responses I received from a respected company that manufactures and sells Audi performance gear, they do not make exhausts:

A cat back will NOT cause this. They are just using that because their techs are too unqualified to diagnose it properly. This is common and I would look for a more qualified dealer or shop.

Since they had the motor out there are many things they could have messed up.

As for those codes I have not seen those yet. You could very easily just have bad or plugged cats. Why was your short block replaced???? If it was from oil consumption your cats would be easily damaged.

If it idles rough and the cats aren't plugged up I would be looking at the cam tensioners if they were reused and you have no missfire codes.

Like I said they had your motor apart, it sounds like they goofed something on the reassembly.

When the light comes on the fuel mileage is terrible and car runs a bit rough. The same 2 CEL’s are back, P2097 and P2098, right bank too lean and left bank too rich. I am having difficulty believing that the sensors can pick up the change of exhaust after the converters. The mechanic is trying to say velocity has changed, but then it should give the same error for both sides and not say one side is too rich and the other too lean. I simply installed exhaust after the cats, this error doesn’t appear for any other car just mine.
People stop me and tell me they like my car! While I am gracious if they only knew the consistent problems I have had. This car is truly a stripper, looks great but expensive to maintain. Sad part is Audi doesn’t want to help and have left it all on the dealer. I think Audi Canada is punishing me because I have an American car and they frown on cross border shopping. I never imported this car and I never got a awesome deal on the vehicle, so in the end I am getting the shaft with this lemon.

Mechanic has been very busy and unable to work on my car; I was supposed to have it back Monday evening. I have a B7 2.0 A4 with the S-Line as a loaner, this car works without any software bugs. Each 2.0 I have had has been different, this one is a slow unit with lots of turbo lag. I don’t understand why you would buy a 2.0 Audi, all you get is the name Audi and you have to pay extra. The car is very boring and not equipped with any great options, you may as well by a fully loaded domestic or Japanese model. At least you would get reliability and a higher trip level, this 2.0 does not even have a trip computer, I can’t set the display to show travel time or anything other than time and kilometres left on the tank. I am told Audi cannot keep the B8 2.0’s in stock, well I am sure there will be a lot of warranty claims in time…

Another day another trip to service for my car, I don’t think I have had the car for more than a week without it having to go back to service since April. It definitely has not run without a CEL or some type of problem for more than 3 days at a time since April! Still working through the Insurance bull to get my stereo replaced. Insurance has been very difficult and taken a really long time trying to save money, I think in the end they saved $40 over my original quote, and dragged this issue out for nearly 5 months. I think in the long run with all the time spent getting quotes and talking to people they probably lost a lot more money. I included a happier picture today of my bike and car. Wherever I go people compliment me on the car, but all I wish for is that it would run for more than 3 days at a time, at this point another civic would be awesome. So for service tomorrow, we have, low oil, Check Engine Light, clips missing to hold door panel on, clunk from front end, and oil seepage on valve cover.

Exclusivity and German Vehicles

Missing Stereo Big
Originally uploaded by homeychan
I wish I had bought the Japanese luxury car with “no soul” as the German car salesman put it. At least it would run for more than a week at a time. My Low oil light just came back on, and the car has a brand new short block right from Germany. I have a CEL that we just keep replacing parts to fix and the front end clunks now. Audi told me to pound sand and won’t honour my warranty and even took away my CPO warranty after giving it to me. While this is a stunning looking car, it is really only good for parking in my driveway, it only looks good but doesn’t actually run. I would like to compare this car to a dating a stripper, they are beautiful but boy are they expensive and high maintenance! This S4 is my stripper... I am not sure these Audi people have anything on domestics, we all just buy into the exclusivity but otherwise they fail more than most other cars. At least now I can say I have to pay $100 for Audi windshield wipers rather than $20 for our old Civic, I can even pay $500 for a Audi windshield that cracks the same as the $200 one on any other car. Today was a bad day for me and my B6 - again.

On a positive note - my car goes in to have the stereo replaced tomorrow after it was stolen in April while the car waited for warranty at the dealer.

Loaner 1: B8 3.2: Car worked great, was pretty fast and had a nice colour display and parking assist, doors opened when you pulled on the handle.

Loaner 2: B8 2.0T: Air conditioning did not work, had to pull door handle twice to open, the car was incredibly slow.

Loaner 3: B8 2.0T Dynamic suspension did not work and you had to pull on door knob twice for it to open, but car had good power, transmission intermittently “clunked”.

Loaner 4: B8 2.0T: Side assist worked intermittently and randomly flashed, car drove well and had way more power, transmission good and door opened on first pull.

Loaner 5: B7 2.0T: Car worked just like a car should, but didn’t have the neat features like start button and all the rest. This car did not need a software upgrade.

I would be hesitant to purchase a B8 Audi and would maybe wait till they fixed all the software glitches and improved build quality, it seems you even need a software upgrade for the tail lights on the Audi SUV after the previous software caused some problems. A friend of mine has another B8 2.0T that makes terrible noises intermittently at start-up and barely runs initially, but I am sure you can get a software upgrade for that too.

I don't think buying an Audi is a good idea.

Mother Trucker!

CEL

Wow – I thought this was finally over and the oil situation was fixed. Well today was another eye opener, at lucky 97,777km the oil light came back on! And I also heard a pronounced clunk from the front end like I did last week when the tire blew up, except this time the tires are fine. Something is broken or not connected back up properly in the front of this car. The car also gave the worst fuel mileage ever with 300km’s to a tank of fuel before the CEL came back on, the week before without the CEL the car gave over 400Km’s to a tank of fuel city driving, which is impressive. So let’s review, Check Engine Light (CEL), low oil light, clunking from the front end and poor fuel mileage.

This oil light may be within Audi standards, since this is the only car I know of that you have to add oil between services regularly, almost like an old two stroke!

The Life of an Audi

Service

When I bought this German car I bought it thinking “it’s gotta be waaay better than a domestic!”, after all I owned a Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe that cost a fortune to maintain. I mean really European cars are far more refined, haven’t the Germans been making cars the longest? Germans tell you they had a car before the model T, so I expected the car to be incredibly refined, reliable and rawesome (couldn’t think of another “R”). Little did I know this car would spend most of its life at the service department. The build quality of the new Audi’s is appalling; I don’t know why the domestics have such a bad name. Did you know that on a Audi Q7 SUV, there is a software update for the light bulbs! To go along with the other ones I have personally encountered with the side assist and dynamic suspension. I am incredibly disappointed not just in the quality but the customer service from Audi, but it’s only a matter of time before it catches up to them... Audi 5000 for now, until my next post.

-you have to be an 80’s person to get the Audi 5000 comment, but look it up on Google, I am sure you can find out why it was used as slang in rap songs from the period.

Back to Germany?

Service

Well guess what, the Check Engine Light (CEL) just won’t go away. It’s back and the car is back in for service. The next steps are to test the catalytic converters and make sure they are not plugged. I wonder what else will break after this? On the bright side the car has more new parts than old now!

Back to Germany - Maybe...?

Letter from Audi Canada

Here is another meathead response from Audi, well they contradict themselves since the service records show the problem started at 41,000kms.

Well I drove a new 4 door M3 and man the thing was amazing! I brought my car to see what they would give me on a trade and they told me 15k! Holy crap, talk about taking it without lube, they wanted $71k for a used 08 with 20,000km’s on it. Wow that would be giant difference. I guess I am stuck with this car till the wheels fall off, but that could be tomorrow since one nearly fell off last week.

*UPDATE* Car is going back to the dealer on Thursday for the Check Engine Light issues, looks like the oxygen sensors did not fix the problem. I think they are going to try the catalytic converters now. I will have another loaner so we’ll see what unique problems this one has.

In my dreams I would have a 4 door M3, instead of this pile of Audi, all though it does look awesome on the road and sounds great with the exhaust, I would hope the M3 actually ran for more than 3 days at a time.

I have attached a picture of the life of my car! People always ask how I stay so calm with all these problems, look through the blog and tell me how I could have made it better by freaking out? I think laughing all this off is all I can do, either way all these actions will eventually catch-up to the guilty parties, maybe not today but tomorrow and then I’ll be vindicated.

No, Not again!

Well I finally got my car back, new AC, new door panel, new steering wheel, new oxygen sensors – Awesome! Got a flat almost immediately and now it is going to take a week to order the tire (Conti Sport Contact 3) from the US. Looks like the Audi mechanic gets to stay, no check engine light yet.

Interestingly the 2009 2.0 A4 service loaner issues with “side assist” is a known issue and the car requires a software upgrade. That’s just odd for a company the size of Audi to put out cars with so many problems. This post is a little glum because I had the car for a few hours before it broke again, this time don’t think I can blame Audi, but I wish it would end and I could just drive instead of just paying.

I got soul

My dealer was nice enough to provide me with another loaner while they dismantle my car again. This is my forth loaner and has its own quirks. When I was shopping for a car, I was looking at a Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus, Benz and Audi. The Mercedes salesman told me the Japanese cars have no soul, once you have driven one you’ve driven them all! I actually believed him because after driving the S4, I said this is the car for me! However I think Audi has taken it to a new level, of the 3 2.0’s I have driven, the first one ran terrible, Dynamic suspension and the AC did not work, the second one the doors did not open when you pulled on the handle and you could only turn ASR off and nothing else, this new 2.0 the side impact feature to let you know when a car is in your blind spot does not work. It doesn’t go off or sometimes just randomly starts flashing when nothing is beside me and I change lanes. These cars definitely have soul, if variety and dysfunction counts; I wonder if that’s what Audi was aiming for? To be fair the 3.2 had no problems, the Dynamic suspension, door entry, side impact and power was great.

Burn it all!

Audi Canada called me because of my comments on a service survey, I pointed out that Audi sucks and I would never buy another one or wish one on my worst enemy, but my dealer is amazing and have gone above and beyond to help me. So the guy from Audi called, I tell him Audi sucks and the dealer is great and he says “thanks, I am glad you have had such a positive experience with Audi” I had to clarify with the dealer, he says “great, thanks for filling out the survey!” - Wow but I guess these are call centre people with no authority.
Dealer called, partial removal of engine to replace AC compressor, still troubleshooting CEL errors, mechanic thinks wire may have been pinched with short throw shifter install, because tranny had to be lowered. Tranny does not have to be lowered for shifter install; install is done from inside the cab of car with 5 tools, not rocket science. Besides this dealer is taking responsibility for repairs and service manager and writer are great. This is still going to cost me 2 to 3k again, I wish the car would catch on fire except I would get screwed by insurance, so that can’t happen.

Back to Germany!

I don't think the factory mechanic is convinced the Oxygen sensors are installed wrong. My car is not chipped, it just has a cat back. The service manager told the mechanic he fixes it or he goes back to germany, his choice! :)

We'll see if he is there on Friday!

This %$@^ just never ends!

Ok here so here is chapter 200 in the Audi S4 saga! Just got off the phone with my dealer, checking the Oxygen sensors is only about a 4 hour job and they will cover those costs because of the engine swap - that’s good news. The bad news the AC compressor is going to be a little more difficult, the Audi manual says remove engine! You would think by now my engine would be quick release... Tech is figuring out a different way to remove the AC compressor. The good news out of all this is on the forums my car has had every common failure, only two left are windows and sun roof, and those are reasonably cheap to fix compared to the thousands I’ve spent. I can see why Audi is tough on warranty, they would go bankrupt if they actually honoured all the warranty problems!
Also learned a valuable lesson on insurance, it’s a “cost offsetter” and not to be used to provide “replacement costs”. Gotta change my expectation that insurance actually pays to replace your stuff, I think they just want to pay as little as possible, after all they have margins too.
The service guy at Glenmore Audi told me the seat cover replacement books at 2.5 hours and shop rate is $130, insurance said they will pay $90 and 1 hour. I like the tactics and I will have to try that when buying insurance. :)

Insurance - 04-Aug-2009

Still working on resolving my insurance issues for the stolen stereo in my car, this never ends. So it looks like the insurance company prices are considerably lower or at cost to Mobile Sounds where I originally bought the gear and had it installed. Mobile is now refusing to purchase the parts at those prices, so I have to work it out with my insurance company. I want Mobile Sounds to install the parts because they know what they are doing, I really don’t want to bring my car to Futureshop or Best Buy. I hope soon I can get my stuff installed and get the car finished.
Picked up the car from the German Car Specialists (Two Square) and the bill was less than expected only $900. AC still doesn’t work though and I am told it will cost an additional $2000 for the compressor and dryer. I am going to bring the car back to the dealer and see.
- Check Engine Light back on, hope that gets fixed tomorrow.
- Door still damaged from break-in.
- Missing some of the sound pan under the car.
- Missing bracket on seat rail.
- Missing stereo.
Nothing is easy with this car at all. The insurance adjuster is really nice, but I don’t think she has anything to do with how much I will get the shaft on my replacement parts. Seems like insurance is not to replace your stolen parts but to provide some offset to the repurchase of your stolen parts. I guess I need to get rid of my pre conceived conceptions of insurance.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Spoke to the service manager at my dealer today and he was very nice, the car is scheduled to go back in on Wednesday to have the CEL issues looked at.

I had brought the car to a local German car specialist when I couldn't get a hold of the dealer and they said after very complete testing the Oxygen sensors are connected up reversed. Glenmore Audi will fix the issue if this is really the problem next week. I was also told the AC needed a valve replaced, the total charge for all these parts and diagnosis is $1200. After the valve replacement the car still blows hot so it needs a compressor now too, I am told the old valve was no good. I think I am quickly getting up to the $2000 guess except this is just for the AC.

I am not sure I have enough money to operate this car.

More Problems

Well costs are adding up, it seems it will cost about $500 to figure out why the AC is not working and the following codes are coming on:
P2097
Description:
Post catalyst fuel trim system too rich

P2098
Description:
Post catalyst fuel trim system too lean

Searching all the threads seems like a collection of people with S4’s with failed AC, codes and oil consumption. I have included some links but I am not sure how Audi gets away with it!

Build Quality

My third 2009 loaner 2.0 A4 had air conditioning and was considerably faster than the previous 2.0. It was so much faster I thought it was a 3.2! I guess the previous car had some issues, I feel sorry for whomever buys that car. The new car however also had problems, the transmission was very “lumpy” and at times I thought it was going to fall out, the button to turn off ESP also did not work, it only did “ASR/ESP on” or “ASR off”, out of the three loaners two had problems, hopefully sooner than later this all catches up with Audi. Out of the 3 cars both 2.0 had issue, the single 3.2 seemed very good and I liked it much better than the 2.0, it was quieter, less buzzy and had consistent power and good fuel mileage.

I dropped my car at a private garage to have the AC and CEL codes repaired, hopefully this is not another $2000 job. Sadly my dealer is not calling me back, maybe I'll stop in and see what is happening, I am sure the explanation is legit.

23-July-2009

The saga continues, I can’t get the dealer to phone me back for some reason, must be a good reason as they have been great to me so far. I really would like to get the AC and check engine light fixed and wrap this all up. The insurance company is in the process of finalizing the replacement stereo, it has now come in from Pioneer, but my settlement is reduced by 10% for depreciation, hope to have it all installed next weekend. The insurance representative and the guys from Mobile sounds have all been great. Seems everybody but Audi has been great, funny whenever I tell this story people are amazed at what poor customer service and disregard for the customer that exists within Audi. Odd I never thought buying a luxury car would mean poor service, I always thought you get what you pay for, not in this case. A friend of mine had a luxury car that spent most of its time in the shop too; he traded it on a Hyundai and has no problems since! I don’t know if I could buy a Hyundai though, maybe a Cadillac is in my future, support North American.

16-Jul-2009

So I finally got my car back and I sure am happy that it runs! Not to sound ungrateful but I get a Check Engine Light (CEL) for the catalytic converters that says:
P2096 Post CAT Fuel Trim too lean
P2099 Post CAT Fuel Trim too rich
Also my air conditioning no longer works and these are the hottest months here. I have been told I need a new condenser for the AC and that cost $1500, no reason for the CEL has been given yet but every time it has been cleared it comes back in a day or so. I don’t understand why the AC would suddenly break, but I guess it has, it did work when the car was dropped off though.

This car is a money pit.

No Warranty

14-June-2009

My dealer told me the car is running and should be ready to go soon, this is a bittersweet moment. I get my car back which is great, just too bad it’s going to be hard to enjoy it because of how Audi treated me.
Throughout this process my dealer provided me with a loaner car, the first was a 3.2 litre 2009 A4 and the second a 2.0 litre 2009 A4. The second car the 2.0 hopefully is not a representation of Audi’s build quality, the Dynamic suspension did not work and I was told this is typical on these cars until dealers apply a software update. The second issue I had was the Air Conditioning did not work on the car, it’s brand new! The car only blows in outside air and boy does that black interior get hot. On a positive note the new electronics package on the cars is very nice; I like the park assist and the blind spot indicator on the mirrors. The new mirrors are also larger which gives better visibility on the side. My favourite is the keyless entry and start button although the second loaner car required me to pull the handle twice prior to unlocking while the 3.2 unlocked as soon as I was close.
Anyways this upcoming week may be very busy since the car will have to go back to the stereo store to have the Nav and related equipment all re-installed. The insurance company is applying a 10% depreciation to all the equipment :(.

Garbage - Fitting

I have not posted a lot lately, I was out of town. I am back but will be gone again this weekend.
I have been told by the dealer that the short block has arrived and the valve stem seals have been replaced in the heads. Looks like there might have been some leakage through the valve stems and now it has been fixed I hope. My insurance company is working with me to get my stereo replaced and hopefully that can all be co-ordinated so when I get the car back it is all fixed. My dealer rules!
Audi Canada is a giant pain in the butt and sadly I really despise those people. I can’t understand what I am missing to explain why they have treated me the way they have. You buy a luxury car it breaks because of a manufacturers defect, the car goes in for service several times while within the warranty period and they deny warranty. They are always vague and provide a reason that suits the situation. Bottom line Audi sucks!

I am off to Salt lake City today for World Superbike at Miller Motorsports park and will try to post any updates as they come in.

For today here are some more comments I recieved by email, some are entertaining:

====================
WOW! I would never expect Audi to behave this way. Maybe because this is Audi Canada, but that should be a “non-issue” here. My Dad has an A8 for some time now (I believe he is on his second now), some other people have these cars for years too, and never heard such story, but that is in Europe, maybe this is the difenerece. I took liberty to forward to some of my friends here – you never know, maybe someone knows someone that could help.
I hope you chose your bikes better than cars now…LOL
BTW – ho’s going? Haven’t heard from you in some time.

27-May-2009

Been away up north in Fort McMurray for the last two days, have not heard anything from Audi or dealer again. I will follow up with the dealer next week when i am back from Salt Lake City next Tuesday.

On Monday I had a conversation with Christopher from Audi and he was not aware of the letter from Audi Canada explaining I had warranty. Seems like the warranty department doesn't know the rules that the service department is trying to force on me. He asked me to fax him the letter but I directed him to the blog, which he refused to visit, so I emailed him the link to the blog at audicare@audi.com.

Here are some well wishing emails I recieved:

Sorry to hear about this shit going down with Audi Ryan. I always thought Audi was a stand up respectable company and a car I would consider buying if I had the gold coins to do it. This changed my mind about Audi and what they are all about!

They are proving they are just another corporate giant trying to screw the little guy again after they taking your hard earned cash! What a bunch of tight ass excuse making a$$holes!

------------------

"Man, I'm steering clear of Audi after your experience. It's bad enough they can't do a proper ring seal, even worse that they've left you out to dry like they have. I hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction. Good luck with it Ryan."

I am happy to be getting closer to driving my car again, but feel terrible for the dealer. Hopefully dealer is able to recover costs from Audi, sent them a copy of my CPO warranty letter.

The Dealer

My Dealer
This blog may seem anti Audi, but I want to comment on the outstanding job being done by my dealer so far. My dealer has been fantastic and if they sold another brand of car I would buy from them! The service guys are genuine and seem to do good work, I’ve heard some people refer to the dealer as “the stealer”, but not these guys. They have gone above and beyond on numerous occasions to date; in fact this has become a Ryan and Glenmore Audi against Audi Canada. Audi has denied me warranty because my dealer had “missed opportunities” and has pointed the finger squarely at the dealer. Problem I have with that thinking is the dealer did not build the faulty engine; all they have done is troubleshoot the issue, if the dealer misdiagnosed the problem, it doesn’t change the fact the car came off the line with a defect from Audi! So far the dealer has offered to pay for my stereo that was stolen out of my car and have provided me with a loaner; at least having them being reasonable has helped make this a little better. I will happily bring my car to the dealer for service if it ever runs again!

If the rest of Audi's dealer network is this good, I can understand how they stay in business, because it's certainly not a result of customer service from Corporate.

23-May-2009 Some Pictures

Here are some pictures of my car as it sits for the last 7 weeks. My dealer has been fantastic and very helpful, after my discussion with Audi yesterday it seems that it's me and the dealer against Audi. The comments on the phone about "missed opportunities" and "not normally throwing dealers under the bus" cover it perfectly. If someone could tell me what "missed opportunities" mean I would really appreciate it.

Letter to Audi from lawyer

File No: 09-xxxx

Ajax, Ontario, Canada

Attention: Mediation/Arbitration Unit

Dear Sir:

RE: Ryan Fernandez’s Audi Repairs and Warranty

Please be advised that we have been retained by Ryan Fernandez in regard to this matter. Mr. Fernandez is the owner of a 2005 Audi S4 - Serial No: WAUPL68E55XXXXX, Description 05, S4, S4, 6SPD. This motor vehicle has been repaired and serviced at XXXX XXXXX, XX Rxxxxrd Way SW, Calgary, Alberta on sixteen (16) occasions between September 22, 2006 and February 11, 2009. Unfortunately, the car still continues to experience problems in relation to the oil consumption and related issues.

On September 22, 2006 our client first brought his car to XXXXX Audi, with 49,759 km on it and had the engine oil replaced by synthetic oil and had the filter changed. The car was returned to the dealership on December 11, 2006, at 51,994 km, because another oil and filter change was needed. Our client had to take his car into the dealership six times throughout 2007, due to oil consumption problems. In 2008, our client again had to take the vehicle into the dealership 6 times because of the high level of oil consumption of the car. In 2009 Mr. Fernandez has already had to bring his car in twice because of continued problems in relation to the oil consumption of the car.

On July 28, 2008 Mr. Fernandez brought his car into the dealership at 79,097 km in order to have the oil weighed as per Audi procedure to determine consumption and he was told that according to Audi’s policy he was to return to the dealership in 1000 km in order to have the oil drained and weighed again for comparison. He brought the car back on August 18, 2008 at 80,768 km in order

to have the oil consumption checked. The dealership drained and weighed the oil and found the car to be down 1.7 kgs of oil in 1700 km. At this time Mr. Fernandez was told that since his car is now over 80,000 km it is not covered by warranty. However, this problem did not arise at this time, the oil consumption problem was specifically brought to the attention of Gxxxxxe Audi on June 1, 2007 at 41,992 km and the owner has continued to try and deal with this problem while the vehicle was well within the range of warranty coverage.

In addition, the car has extended warranty coverage but Audi Canada has failed to allow our client to switch the warranty to the appropriate owner because Audi said they made changes to their policy on August 1, 2006 and the car was registered on August 31, 2006. Mr. Fernandez was proactive in this matter and tried to minimize the loss by having his vehicle covered under warranty, if not for Audi Canada’s refusal to cooperate the vehicle in question would still be covered by warranty.

It is our understanding that Gxxxxxe Audi has volunteered to re-ring the car at no expense to the owner; this repair would include both parts and labor. While we appreciate this offer in order to accept it we require the following:

Written authorization by Audi Canada that the owner will not be charged for any of the repairs that Gxxxxxe Audi offered to complete;
A written assurance by Audi Canada that if these repairs do not permanently solve the problem then Gxxxxxe Audi will continue to repair the car at no cost to the owner; and
That Audi Canada transfer the extended warranty, until 2011 or 160,000 km, documents to our client’s name;

ALTERNATIVE our client is prepared to accept another Audi of similar make, model and year, with the extended warranty coverage in exchange for his Audi.

We require the above in order to guarantee that this issue will continue to be attended to in a timely and efficient manner. If you have any questions in regards to the contents of this letter please advise our office.

We look forward to a speedy resolution to this issue.

Yours truly,

Called Christopher at Audi Canada and he says my issues made it all the way to the CEO level of Audi and my case has been denied due to “missed opportunities” at the dealer level. All the executives and CEO decided that the dealer did not follow proper procedure, and I need to contact the dealer to see if they are willing to help. My car has no engine and is in numerous boxes spread across the shop! I explained the paperwork is not my issue, that’s between Audi and the dealer, not me and Audi.

Called the dealer back and they are going to see what they can do for me on the car. The dealer is willing to help me, but we need to make sure this is a permanent fix and I’m not back in a few months again.

Will have to send legal letter to Audi Canada, I am going to look into renting an advertising sign by the Audi offices...

This problem is causing me serious stress! I think I may have anxiety now or some kinda hyperventilation issue.

My ViewPoint

I’m not sure how else to look at this other than Audi is trying to get out of paying for an expensive problem. My service records show the problem started at 41k in 2007 while the car was under warranty. This is a known issue with these 4.2 engines and if you do a search on the web to some of the forums, you’ll see other similar problems. An Audi S4 retails for over $70k cdn new, I think it’s a reasonable expectation that your car should work properly and the warranty should be honoured even if the parts are expensive. I am not asking for anything extra, I want what is owed to me and that’s a manufacturer’s warranty. Audi has tried everything to get out of this issue, including telling me I could have my extended CPO warranty moved to my name until the problem occurred. Once the car needed a new engine suddenly there was a policy change 28 days before my car was registered and the warranty could not be moved! If you read the service reports and my posts you’ll see that facts show the car had a problem from very early in its life.
If Audi has an issue with the dealer and how the paper work was completed why put me in the middle? Why the hassle, I love my car and fell in love with it after driving it, just too bad Audi does not believe in standing behind there products and try to point the finger at everybody else. The dealer didn’t make the defective engine, my car was regularly serviced, I didn’t cause this problem. I wanted to buy another Audi and was thinking of an RS4, but with all these problems why would I? Why would I encourage anybody else to buy one? This has been experiences dealing with Audi Canada; it seems they are too busy trying to save money rather that customer satisfaction. Can somebody tell me how with all this evidence you could legitimately refuse warranty?
To summarize:
- Car has extended warranty to 2011 and 160,000kms paid for, but in previous owner’s name.
- Problem reported at 41,000kms in 2007 while under basic manufacturers warranty.
- Engine removed twice.
- Car has been sitting with no engine for 6 weeks.
- At week 4 car was broken into and Navi unit stolen while at dealer with no engine, battery and alarm.
- Other 4.2 Audi engines have same problem with no solution.
- Audi says car out of warranty because severity of problem was discovered at 80,700Kms (700 kms over warranty).
